Job Description

Furnace Tender Reports to:  Area Supervisor

Job Purpose:  Tends furnace that melts aluminum ingots and re-melts scrap aluminum used in the molding process.  Follows PPE and safety requirements.  Aware of company quality and environmental policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Attends furnace, maintains the temperature and gas levels per specification levels.  Sprinkles fluxing compound on molten metal to bring impurities to the surface; Skims dross form surface of molten metal; Adds specified proportions of scrap metal and ingots into furnace to keep furnace full; Runs tests on new types of scrap going into furnace.  Must be able to recognize oxidation, water and contaminants; Changes ammonia tank when empty, changes gas tubes when broken; Operates fork truck; Retrieves aluminum ingots from storage area as needed; Ensures metal hoppers in molding areas are emptied and returned to designated areas; Maintains cleanliness of furnaces and equipment; Aware of consequences to employee, customers and environment if procedures are not followed; All other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

 

 

Job Requirements

Required:  High School diploma or GED or prior experience/training in manufacturing environment; Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws, policies and rules.  Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by company.  Must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.  Must be available and willing to work such overtime as is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.  Must be able to stand, bend and stoop.  Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.; Fork Truck license and training.
